This is my email which I sent out to the council members:

Good Morning:

Last week several of us from Preservation SOS came before you at the general meeting and spoke about the demolitions in Springfield. We requested a moratorium on demolitions until a better plan to deal with condemned properties could be adopted.

This morning I am coming to you, again, specially requesting help for Jeff Waltz, the man who spoke about his house on Walnut Court last Tuesday. Time is running out for him. The demolition of his house is scheduled to happen this week according to the demolition contractor.

Anything you could do to help us in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Once the house is bulldozed down, there is nothing left for us to do with this. Until this happens, there is still hope of coming up with a better plan.

Thank you for your time.

Jeff's final plea to city council members via email:
It would have been the nicest house on the
street. It is the largest house on the street and the only duplex. These
homes were built by true craftsmen, no power tools, every thing cut by
hand. Its really hard for me to imagine that. It took so much time to do
this compared to today's standards. The balloon Framing is just
incredible....

...to get a permit then they wanted homestead
papers. I considered moving my homestead but to do that it had to have a
certificate of occupancy. so that killed that idea.No permits. I can't
understand for the life of me why it has to be homesteaded to pull a
permit and as I understand it's not a state law it's a Duval county
rule.Discouraged I kept working on painting actually stripping every
last bit of old paint with chemical stripper, scrappers and sanders.
Unfortunately it was not fast enough for the city so they imposed fines
at $250.00 per day. That's about 15,000.00 per month..I gave up In close
I need enough time to sell or even give this house away to at least save
a part of Springfields History. ..

I'll write tonight from my personal email address. Since it's public record, I don't want to write from my work email.

And here is my email to the entire council and the mayor. Call me sappy, I don't care.

Respected members of the City Council,

I live in Historic Springfield and am writing to express my concern with the continued loss of our historic fabric. These houses are ridiculously solid; there are studs in my home that I can't drive a nail through! They are not the kind we see today in the average suburb with an intended lifespan of barely 30 years. No, they were built to stand the test of time and have done so admirably. Most of the homes in Historic Springfield are 100 years or older, some as old as the late 1800's.

My own home will celebrate her 100th birthday in 2012. And she was in rough shape when we found her nearly 10 years ago. She was literally a shell of her former self with nearly every fixture removed, peeling paint, broken windows, boards for doors, weeds that had turned into trees, but she still had walls...for the most part. She had fallen on hard times in the recent past, unable to shake the drug dealers and prostitutes who had taken up in her rooms and she was condemned. But like a loving grandmama's wrinkled face, she earned every crack in her walls, having been home to numerous families before she fell victim to disrepair. And with a lot of elbow grease and a lot of love we renovated and now she could easily be home to several more generations. I hope she's here at least another 100 years.

This home on Walnut Court deserves the same chance. With a bit of work, she too could stand another 100 years. What is the rush to take down this house? Are there TRUE public safety issues or is she just ugly? Ugly can be fixed, even major structural issues can be fixed. Demolition should be the absolutely hardest thing to do in a Nationally Registered Historic District and yet we see house after house come down. Why not mothball? Board her up, give owners a chance to sell to someone who CAN fix them, give them TIME! Especially in this horrid economy, more and more people cannot afford to paint or repair. Don't punish the neighborhood and the historic homes for that. Again, why not mothball? Board her up until better times. The money that the COJ pays to demolish could mothball an entire street! We can make them not so ugly by following Cleveland's example:
http://www.onntv.com/live/content/onnne ... ml?sid=102

We, your constituents, have heard over and over that the COJ wants to revive downtown, we need to take advantage of our river and our downtown neighborhoods. We'd love that!! But it will be hard to do when there are no historic neighborhoods left. Have you been to Savannah? Have you been to Charleston? Have you been to New Orleans? Did you go there to look at tall buildings and shopping malls or did you go to see the beautiful historic homes and buildings and brick roads? Historic Springfield and all the other historic neighborhoods of Jacksonville should be a destination, a moneymaker for the COJ. We cannot be the next Savannah, Charleston or New Orleans if we continue this reckless path of destruction.

I ask you, no I will BEG you to PLEASE issue an IMMEDIATE MORATORIUM to demolitions of historic structures, starting with this historic home at 423 Walnut Court in Historic Springfield. These historic neighborhoods and this city cannot afford to continue with the status quo.

I wish to thank my Councilman Dr. Gaffney for his past assistance with returning the bricks to my beloved Perry Street and I ask that he and the rest of the City Council please help us save our homes.

Kindest Regards,
Karla xxxxx
